Newly Certifed Athletic Trainer? Learn Your ECC Requirements

The pivotal role of athletic trainers (ATs) in emergency situations is often shown in the media when ATs must perform emergency cardiac care (ECC). The story of Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin collapsing on the field is well-known and continues to highlight the need for ATs to maintain their ECC requirements.

Not only should ATs remain current on ECC, but this is a requirement from the Board of Certification (BOC) to maintain certification. During each reporting period, ECC must be reported alongside continuing education. If you are an athletic training student who has recently become certified or are preparing to take the BOC exam you must be up-to-date on your ECC requirements.

What are the ECC Requirements?

There are many different types of ECC certifications and not all are created equal. To meet ECC compliance requirements, ATs must:

  • Make sure that the ECC standards you’re following cover all the necessary requirements mentioned in the latest “International Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care.”
  • Show ongoing ECC certification with no lapses in certification
  • Keep documentation of both expired and current ECC certifications for two years after a reporting…
